When tasked with developing a concept for my capstone project I struggled with finding my passion, playing with what I knew would be most impactful to me, and avoiding conflict/ trying to "play it safe". I knew that this would be a rare opportunity for me to create a collection solely based on what I wanted to do and what I found most interesting and impactful during my time at ASU.
So, I decided to create a collection inspired by one of the most poignant topics of my college career, my minor, Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies. While my absolute passion in life is fashion and design, the topic of bigotry and 'womanhood'/how society treats women and responds to womanhood is one that will always be important to me. I felt as though I could merge those two topics.
I felt as though designing, patterning, and constructing a fashion collection directly inspired by and with the purpose of representing womanhood and the female experience was something that could perfectly embody my college experience.
This project easily became my favorite collection, concept, patterns, manipulations, etc. I love everything about this collection and it helped me step outside of my comfort zone and truly push myself.
The capstone class itself requires that the student (myself) source all materials, create new custom patterns, source/select models, illustrate designs, create technical flats, construct/make toiles, and construct each garment independently. This class/project single-handedly improved my skillset and took my design and construction skills to a whole other level.
